Excerpt Love and Lust in the Tropics by Derrick West 

She knew their time was very short, and she knew this was the end. She had to have him close to her just one more time. To feel the fire of his passion envelop them, wrap itself around her, become one with her. To feel the heat of him inside her, the warm explosion of his desire filling her.

He felt it too. Pressing her back, he lifted her up on the edge of the table in the cabin, lifting her skirts as she parted her legs for him. Their ship rocked with the explosion of their cannons firing on their pursuers as he pressed himself into her. Their eyes locked together, drawing their souls into each other as she drew his hard desire into her. The fire of passion burst within her, their eyes blazing into each other as they were rocked by a climax they knew would be their last in this lifetime.

Their eyes remain locked as their lips were drawn together.

“My God, you know how to love me, Leif! Never again in this lifetime will we get to feel our love so closely and so wonderfully.”

“Not in this lifetime, dear woman; this is the end of this chapter, isn’t it?”

“But just this chapter, darling man. In our next lifetime, let’s not be pirates. Let’s be respectable people. Let’s settle down and raise a proper family. Maybe a house and a garden.”

He looked deeply into her soul, his eyes soft now with tempered passion. His lips lingered close to hers as he spoke softly. “And could you live a domesticated life, dear woman? Your heart and soul are wild and free, and you know as much as I do how much you adore running full sail before the wind, fighting the damnable overlords who oppress anyone they can, just to feed their greedy need for bloody profits. It’s what you live for.”

“I don’t know, Leif. All I know is that this love we have is something bigger than we understand, and we need to be sure and find each other again next time, and try and get this right. I want more than a few years with you next time. I want a lifetime with you.”

   

About the Author

    Derrick West spends winters on his sailboat in Florida, and summers at his cabin in the northern Rockies. He grew up in the Midwest, graduating from a large university there before embarking on an adventurer’s lifestyle working as a smokejumper, river guide, and mountaineer. He writes as an outlet for the innate sense of romance he believes lies within all of us.

I was given a copy of this book in exchange for a review.  

I have to say that I wasn't sure if this was going to be something that I enjoyed or not.  While I love romance, I am not huge into suspense novels.  It is one of those things that I have to be in the mood for.  That being said, I really did like this book.

Ari is a girl with a secret.  It has been one that she has had all of her life.  When it comes out into the open, she has no choice but to run to the man that her father told her to, Beau. 

I like Beau.  I think he was a  good guy who has the luck to be attracted to a woman that is gifted.  

The story was well-written and there was good character development.  This is the second in the series but I think you could read it as a stand alone. 

Now, that being said I do think there were times when the dialogue was a little dry and repetitive but that happens.  I am also a little tired of the instant love scenarios.  I completely understand being attracted to someone but it seems like everyone is instantly jumping into bed, saying I love you or just things that seem a little outside of reality.  I know its a romance book but still...

I am a fan of Maya Banks and I would recommend you check out the series and let me know what you think.

Grotesque, terrifying, and simply too good to put down!

Cleverly written, the story unfolds one point of view at the time. With each chapter, my anxiety level escalated and I couldn’t seem to read it fast enough. Just when I became sure that I had perceptively figured everything out, the story took another turn. The characters are placed strategically, sometimes with heartbreaking consequences, and every jolting experience had me chasing shadows. While the ending leaves an opening for the next installment, this segment wraps up rather nicely!

I’d like to add one small note:

I abhor, and I mean hate, young children involved in horror novels or movies. I have literally walked out of movies or stopped reading books from certain authors, due to this hang up of mine. The brilliance of Fox Chapman is that he made his monsters, MONSTERS. There was no hang up to have here. His evil creations were gory, scary, and something I wanted dead, FOREVER.

Review

This is a quick, romantic read that starts off a little erratic and then evens out to reveal a beautiful story.

I love the main hero, here. He’s intelligent, compassionate, and strong. He’s better tempered than most Scotsmen in the fictitious world during this era, and his love of family enhances his character. I say “main” hero because there’s a few secondary characters that go to bat for our enchanting couple, earning them the title as well.

Although the heroine is naive, she is intelligent. I like the fact that the author makes her easily relatable, as we’ve all had our momentary lapse of reason when we were young. As with the hero, there are a couple of women that could claim the title of heroine in this story.

With That Being Said…

I have to mention that although I enjoyed the story, there were a few times that I felt a little overwhelmed. There is so much unneeded drama! The story turns more than a carousel, and there are several side stories that may play out in the rest of the series, but seem unnecessary in this book. I was a little disappointed and felt there was a lack of focus, which is surprising for such an outstanding author.

On The Other Hand..

In the author’s defense, I haven’t read all of her previous novels. Although this novel is the beginning of a new series, it includes a few couples that are obviously from former stories. However; this does not take away from the current story completely. If anything, it adds intrigue, and makes me want to grab the rest of her writings! I’ve been following her for some time, and I know that her extensive knowledge of the Regency era is extraordinary. This knowledge is one of the reasons I adore her so, and I enjoy the way she utilizes it through her novels. 

I recommend this for those who love drama, laughter, love, and heartbreak!
